The Connector of Automobile: Fakra's Past and Present Life

FAKRA and HSD connectors are very important in automotive electronic products. Development History

FAKRA is the abbreviation of FAchKReis Automobil (the automobile expert team is composed of engineers from BMW, Huber-Suhner, Rosenberger and other companies, and Huber-Suhner's Connector business and technology were merged into Rosenberger in 2010). At first, it was used for car radio antenna connection for BMW, but now FAKRA has become a universal standard RF connector in the automotive industry and is widely used in the industry.

Rosenberg released the first FAKRA product in 2000, which is based on the SMB interface of RF connector. The integration of plastic shell makes FAKRA product suitable for the rapid assembly of vehicle and ensures the stable connection.

The second generation FAKRA products optimized the design, defined the interface standard performance requirements, and wrote the requirements into ISO20860-1 issued in 2004. The second generation products are mainly finished by turning.

Rosenberg released the third generation FAKRA in 2007, which was cost optimized while maintaining the performance of the second generation. The third-generation products are mainly processed by stamping (there are also stretching methods in the industry), which is more suitable for full-automatic production.

2.1 Performance Parameters of Fakra Connector

According to the parameter requirements in IS0 20860.

Main electrical performance parameters: transmission frequency 0 ~ 4 GHz; Impedance is 50 ohms; Maximum carrying current 1A

Main mechanical performance parameters: lock retention force ≥100N and error prevention force ≥40N.

2.2 Common Applications

Wireless signal transmission: vehicle-mounted AM/FM; GPS; Networking (2~4GHz, including launch); Remote control, etc.

Video transmission application: Based on the outbreak of ADAS, it is mainly used in cameras.

2.5 Waterproof Performance

3.1 Overall Structure of Connector at Board End and Wiring Harness End

The common FAKRA connector is composed of plastic shell, outer conductor, center conductor, insulator, crimping sleeve (only cable harness connector) and secondary lock (only harness connector).

3.2 Secondary Lock, Color Mechanical Error Prevention

Secondary lock: It can ensure that the terminal is installed in place and increase the retention of the terminal. Secondary locks are usually purple.

Color mechanical error prevention: there is a structural design on the mating interface of the connector to prevent wrong plug-in, and different error prevention structures have different color plastic shells. Rosenberg's FAKRA connector provides 14 kinds of error-proof coding.

Coding A: DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting)/radio equipment without phantom support. The plastic shell is black in color.

Coding B: DAB/ radio equipment with phantom support. The color of plastic shell is white.

Coding C:GPS global (satellite) positioning system. The color of plastic shell is blue.

Coding D:GSM mobile phone global system for mobile communication. The color of plastic shell is grape purple.

Coding E: TV 1, CodingF: TV 2. The plastic shell colors are green and brown respectively.

Coding G: remote control/keyless entry system, plastic case is gray.

Coding H:GPS, the molded case is purple.

Coding I: radio controlled parking heating, and the plastic shell is beige.

Coding K: Wireless device with intermediate frequency (IF). The color of plastic shell is curry yellow.

Coding L, m, n: undefined. The plastic shell colors are: carmine, pink orange and pink green.

Coding Z: neutral number. The plastic shell is water blue.
