Not so long ago, a model-specific wiring harness was the same for all vehicles produced for that model. Each harness contains all wires for all possible options, whether or not the option was ordered with the vehicle. Some automakers still make wiring harnesses this way. Wire harnesses designed and built by other automakers include only those wires required for specific options ordered with the vehicle. The reasons for this effort are, on the one hand, the limited space in the car, so unnecessary wires must be avoided as much as possible, and on the other hand, the weight of the wires themselves. Not only are automotive wiring harnesses very long these days, they are also quite heavy, with 50 to 60 kg (110 to 132 lb) fairly common.
